Seedream 4.0: ByteDance's AI Image Editor Competes with Google's Nano Banana
ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has introduced Seedream 4.0, an advanced AI image editing tool designed to rival Google's Gemini's "Nano Banana" feature. While Google's Nano Banana has gained significant attention for its ability to transform photos into stylised artworks, Seedream 4.0 offers similar capabilities, allowing users to generate and edit images with AI.
The launch of Seedream 4.0 highlights China's growing presence in the AI sector, positioning ByteDance as a formidable competitor to established tech giants like Google and OpenAI. This development underscores the global race in AI innovation and the increasing accessibility of advanced AI tools to users worldwide.
Google Drops Mixboard: An AI Mood Board for Your Ideas
Google just launched Mixboard, a playful new AI-powered app that makes mood boarding as easy as typing out a thought. Instead of hunting down images like you would on Pinterest, you can simply write a prompt and let the AI build a board for you. If you’re stuck, there are pre-made boards you can remix and make your own.
It’s powered by Google’s Nano Banana model, which has been getting a lot of buzz for creating realistic, editable images. You can tweak, combine, or regenerate visuals to spark fresh ideas, and even ask the AI to write text to go with your boards. Think home décor inspiration, event planning, branding projects, or just playing around with concepts to see what comes to life.

Edify - An AI-powered learning buddy built by students, for students
Edify, born just a year ago as a student side project, is reimagining how we learn from online courses. With over 1,000 students already using it regularly, entirely through organic growth, the platform is stepping into the spotlight with a bold new vision.
At the heart of Edify is Eddy, an AI-powered companion that doesn’t just summarise content, but makes long courses engaging and digestible. Instead of condensing a two-hour lecture into a shallow two-minute summary, Eddy transforms it into a one-hour interactive deep dive. He anticipates confusing parts and explains them in plain words, highlights prerequisites when new concepts appear, checks for understanding along the way, and even skips the filler so learners stay engaged.
For educators, Eddy isn’t a replacement, but a bridge, making it easier to connect with students and support their learning journey. The project is the work of a passionate 10+ person team of students and educators, with backing from UNSW Founders PFC, Startmate Student Fellowship, and PreX.
What started as EDI is now Edify: a platform built to make learning stick, not just skim.
👉 Stay tuned. Edify is just getting started.
🎓 Learn in 1 Minute: RAG vs Fine-tuning
When you need AI to work with your specific data, you have two main approaches: RAG and fine-tuning. Think of it like the difference between giving someone a reference book versus teaching them to memorise facts.
RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) is like giving an AI a smart search engine. It looks up information from your documents in real-time to answer questions. Use RAG for:
Customer support with constantly updated product manuals
Legal research that needs to cite current case law
Company Q&A systems with evolving policies
Fine-tuning is like intensive training that rewires how the AI thinks. You show it thousands of examples until new behaviours become automatic. Use fine-tuning for:
Making AI write in your company's specific voice
Training models to output structured data formats
Creating specialised assistants for medical or legal domains
Choose RAG when you need access to changing information that must stay current. Choose fine-tuning when you need to fundamentally change how the AI behaves or communicates.

The Bootstrap: Building Startups from Scratch - Access to Capital Beyond VC – Featuring Janine Owen
Access to capital is one of the biggest challenges for early-stage founders. While most immediately think of VC or angel investment, grants provide a compelling non-dilutive alternative. Despite $100 billion in grant funding available to Australian businesses each year, many founders don’t know where to start—or assume the process is too complex. Janine Owen, founder of Grant’d, Australia’s first AI-powered, all-in-one grants platform, shares her insights on when and how founders should approach grants. With over 18 years of experience, she has helped organisations raise $100+ million and created Grant’d to make grant-seeking more accessible.
